Volume 12, Number 22: October 20, 2008
I will be hosting Vista Nights in San Francisco on October 22. I will have
giveaways and a lot of useful information. I would like to engage as broad an audience
as possible. The type of attendees might include:
• Casual users (web surfers, office users)
• Photographers / videographers
• Developers / hobbyists
• Simplify the process of debugging parallel applications
The high-level topics covered at Vista Nights include:
• Performance (fixing slow performance, finding disruptive software)
• Office 2007 (Excel, Word, PowerPoint - tips and tricks)
• Web authoring (creating your own Web sites)
• Photography (Microsoft Pro Photo Tools, PhotoGallery)
• Video / TV (digital camcorders, encoding, burning DVDs, Camtasia)
• Gadgets (installing, downloading, modifying)
• Security (firewall, Defender)
• Utilities & Tools (SysInternals)
• Voice Recognition
And my good buddy Rob Bagby, who is awesome, asks "Are you interested in REST
(or want to know what all the hype is about)? Do you want to know how to do any
of the following?"
• Build an AJAX-Friendly WCF service
• Build HI-REST services with WCF (supporting all of the CRUD operations)
• Consume HI-REST GET Services with Silverlight 2
• Understand how to support the caching inherent in the Web in your RESTful services
• Understand how to fully control the URI of your RESTful services
Rob Bagby has built 10 blog posts
(and growing) and six screencasts (also growing) on these subjects and more.
Finally, learn about the future of Microsoft's technology. The place is the
Professional Developers Conference
on October 27 - 30 in Los Angeles. It's about software + services, cloud computing,
and Windows 7. I was hanging out with the user experience folks last week and got
a glimpse of Windows 7. It is nice and zippy and smooth. A ton of effort went into
making Windows 7 a smooth and intuitive experience. Even if something was one pixel
off in the interface, the dev team was extremely responsive in putting user experience
as a top bug fix priority. I can't wait. We were running on an older laptop and it
was snappy. If you plan to be at PDC, shoot me an e-mail.
It would be great to grab a cup of coffee with you.
